What to look for when buying a used car
It is completely understandable if you’re reluctant to buy a used car at first, but as long as you are careful and the seller is legitimate, you could walk away with a much better deal than if you went for a new one.
However, it is your responsibility to do your research – even if a car has a safety certificate, there could be issues lurking under the hood. For that reason, it is important to take the following into account before you make such an impactful purchase.
For years, there has been debate over the significance of a used car’s mileage, namely how it reflects upon the vehicle’s condition. This makes sense in isolation as cars only have so many miles to give, but the mileage alone says little about a car’s health.
It is still possible for a vehicle with low mileage to have its days numbered, and it’s equally possible for a high mileage car to still work like new, assuming it is professionally and effectively maintained.
2. Overall vehicle condition
Even if you think you have a good deal, it is paramount that you inspect the car to make sure everything is up to code. Have a look for any dents or scratches that haven’t been detected or just haven’t been fixed.
On top of this, poor repair work is often obvious up-close; gaps between body panels and uneven repaint jobs can be clear signs of damage. If they are trying to hide the vehicle’s real history, then this is a red flag.
3. Engine
Virtually everything a car does is made possible by the engine, so take a used car for a test drive as soon as you can to see how it operates. Does the exhaust produce any abnormal noises or excessive emissions?
Is the oil level correct, and is the oil cap sludge-free? Make sure your drive it for at least twenty minutes, as this gives you enough time to see if there is a leak of any kind – which you would not detect while the car is turned off.
4. Windows and controls
Finally, make sure you test if the locks and windows function correctly before you buy the car, and test any additional elements such as a sunroof. Even if the car gets all of the essentials right, the quality-of-life features we come to expect in modern vehicles are equally (and vitally) important.
Does the radio work? Does the air conditioning run properly? Even the windshield wipers need to be tested – it might seem excessive, but this is better than finding out hours down the road.
Looking to get a used car inspected by a professional?
Ultimately, a well-maintained vehicle (especially one with a safety certificate) should always be the aim when you buy a used car.
However, there is no substitute for getting up close with the vehicle and making sure it reaches your standards. It's always safer to get a professional mechanic to inspect the vehicle so they can find any potential issues, especially if you don't know what to look for.
