If your car refuses to start and you're left stranded with a flat battery, don't panic. Here's your definitive guide on how to jump-start a car with leads. It's a simple procedure if you know the steps and a lifesaver when you're stuck in a bind.
Before you begin, ensure both cars are off, the keys are out of the ignitions and you’re wearing protective gloves. Safety is paramount when dealing with electricity.
Next, position both cars so their batteries are within reach of the jumper leads but do not let the cars touch. The closer they are, the easier it'll be to connect the leads.
Now, it's time to connect your leads. Attach one red clip to the positive terminal (+) of the flat battery and the other red clip to the positive terminal of the good battery. Then, connect one black clip to the negative terminal (-) of the good battery and the other black clip to an unpainted metal part of the car with the flat battery, away from the battery itself.
Now, start the engine of the car with the good battery. Let it run for a few minutes. This will allow the flat battery to draw power from the good battery.
Try to start the car with the flat battery. If it starts, let it idle for a while to build up charge. If it doesn’t, check the leads are connected properly, then try again.
Turn off both engines before removing the jumper leads. Remove them in the reverse order you connected them, starting with the black clip on the unpainted metal part and ending with the red clip on the flat battery.
Drive your car for at least 30 minutes to allow the battery to recharge. If your car won't start again after this, your battery may be beyond saving and you might need to replace it.
Jump-starting a car is a practical skill every driver should master. It'll save you from getting stranded and waiting for roadside assistance and it's easier than you think.
Remember, knowing how to jump start a car is a necessary skill, but the best solution is preventative maintenance. Regularly check your battery and if you notice it struggling to start your car, it's likely time for a replacement.
