How Long Does a Pink Slip Last?

March 10, 2023

If you're a driver in NSW, you've probably heard of a pink slip. In this blog post, we'll provide answers to some common questions about pink slips and eSafety checks.

What Is A Pink Slip?

A pink slip or eSafety inspection report, is a certificate provided by a mechanic that verifies your vehicle is roadworthy and meets the safety standards set by the state of New South Wales. It's required for light vehicles more than 5 years old to be legally registered and driven on the road.

Light vehicles include:

  • Passenger cars
  • Motorcycles
  • Goods carrying vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of 4.5 tonnes or less with no power-operated brakes
  • Vehicles used to provide point to point transport
  • Trailers and caravans with an aggregate trailer mass of 4.5 tonnes or less, including those fitted with breakaway brakes but not including those fitted with air or vacuum breakaway braking systems

How Long Does A Pink Slip Last?

Most people obtain a pink slip every year around the same time as their registration needs to be renewed. However, it’s not necessary to wait until you’re nearing your expiry date to get a pink slip.

Once your mechanic has conducted your eSafety check and issued your pink slip, it is valid for six months—so you’ll have that amount of time to organise it before your registration is due. This can minimise the hassle of organising the certifications you need to keep your car on the road.

What Is Assessed During an eSafety Check?

During an eSafety check, a qualified mechanic will assess your vehicle to ensure it meets the required safety standards. Some of the things assessed during an eSafety check include:

  • Brakes
  • Tyres
  • Suspension
  • Steering
  • Lights and indicators
  • Windscreen and windows
  • Seat belts and restraint systems
  • Engine and drivetrain components

What Happens if My Vehicle Fails its Inspection?

If your vehicle fails its eSafety check, you'll be provided with a list of the issues that need to be addressed. You'll then need to have the necessary repairs made and have your vehicle re-inspected within 14 days. If the repairs are not made within that time period, you will need to pay for another eSafety check.

In some cases, the issues that cause a vehicle to fail its eSafety check may be minor and can be fixed on the spot. For example, if a light bulb is not working, the mechanic may be able to replace it and issue a pink slip on the spot. However, if the issues are more serious, such as a problem with the brakes or suspension, the vehicle will need to be taken off the road until the necessary repairs are made.

It's important to note that even if your vehicle passes its eSafety check and you receive a pink slip, this doesn't guarantee your vehicle will remain roadworthy. It's still your responsibility to maintain your vehicle and have it serviced regularly.
