How Long Does A Clutch Last?

K & T Ballina Mechanical • April 11, 2022

Clutch pedals are designed to withstand a lot of wear and tear. However, over time, they will wear down, especially if they're not well maintained or used correctly. Read on to learn more about how long your clutch should last and ways to look after it today.

What is the typical life expectancy of a clutch?

Depending on the model, a clutch can last anywhere from 20,000 to 150,000 miles. If you spend a lot of time cruising on the motorway, this is more gentle on your clutch and can see it last longer. But, if you live in the city, the stop-start nature of driving on crowded roads can shorten its lifespan.

Signs that your clutch is failing

1. A soft clutch pedal

When you push down on your clutch, you may find that it feels weak or spongy, which is one of the first signs of a problem. As you are driving, pay attention to how the clutch works when you push the pedal. If you know how it typically feels, you will be able to recognise when there is a problem.

2. Disturbing noises

There are a number of sounds that might be made when the components in your clutch aren't functioning properly. These sounds may be caused by a loose component striking other components, or they might be caused by parts sticking together.

3. A stuck pedal

A jammed clutch can generate grinding sounds or prevent your car from shifting into gear, whilst a clutch pedal that is locked to the floor leaves your vehicle inoperable and a safety hazard. A visit to your mechanic is recommended if you find yourself in any of these situations.

What can you do to extend the life of your clutch?

When you come to a stop at a traffic light or crossing and estimate you'll be at a standstill for more than 10 seconds, do not sit with your foot on the clutch. Instead, shift your vehicle out of gear, apply the handbrake and let your gearbox sit in neutral until the light turns green again. Instead of exerting continual pressure on your clutch, this will provide it with a much-needed rest period.

Riding your clutch (the practice of keeping the clutch partially disengaged) could also shorten its life considerably, so try to avoid using the clutch pedal when pressing on the accelerator unless you absolutely need to.
